Finnish union to Estonian workers: Register!
The Finnish construction workers union Rakennusliitto has launched a campaign targeted at Estonian construction workers. Union officials distributed information to Estonians who boarded Tallinn-bound ships at the end of the work week. The union asks Estonian workers register as foreign workers and join the trade union.
On a trip last week to Helsinki, this reporter heard more Estonian than Finnish when he visited construction sites in Helsinki’s city center. Estonian construction workers interviewed expressed mixed feelings about Finland. “We’re the niggers here,” one worker said. “And they pay us like it.” “But,” he admitted, “we still earn more than we’d earn in Estonia.” Another worker noted that if you possess both good Finnish-language skills and a conviction of your own worth, it is possible to negotiate a “normal” wage.
